Today, his collection includes approximately 6,000 model trains.
Hara’s models are renowned for their precision and use of real railway engineering, featuring iron wheels and overhead power collection to achieve realistic coasting. As the sun sets, Yokohama transforms into a dreamlike cityscape, where historic buildings and iconic landmarks glow in brilliant illumination. Named one of the ‘Three New Best Night Views of Japan’ by the Night View Convention & Visitors Bureau, the city’s skyline speaks for itself. After exploring Tokyo Gendai, there’s no better way to end the day than by soaking in Yokohama’s enchanting night views, where the lingering spirit of art meets the magic of city lights.
In the Minatomirai area, the 69th-floor “Sky Garden” at Yokohama Landmark Tower offers a breathtaking panoramic view (admission ¥1,000 for adults). From high above, the glittering skyscrapers, Ferris wheel, and city lights unfold in a stunning 360-degree display, capturing the essence of Yokohama’s urban beauty. At the rooftop deck of “Osanbashi Pier”, you can enjoy the magical sight of illuminated ships blending with the lights of the port, while the sea breeze enhances the sense of openness (free admission). The “Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse” becomes even more romantic at night when it’s bathed in a warm orange glow, making it a perfect spot for capturing beautiful photos with the Bay Bridge in the background.
For a more relaxing experience, “Yokohama Minatomirai Manyo Club” offers natural hot springs, stone saunas, and dining, but one of its highlights is the footbath garden, where you can soak your feet while taking in the sparkling night views (admission ¥3,500 for adults). Another unique spot is “CAFE & BAR Hemingway”, a floating café-bar-restaurant located at Yokohama Boat Park, which also doubles as one of the city’s best night-view locations.
If you want to enjoy Yokohama from a higher perspective, hop on the “Yokohama Air Cabin”—a ropeway connecting Sakuragicho Station and Unga Park Station (¥1,200 one way for adults)—and take in the glittering cityscape from above. For a peaceful stroll, head to “Kishamichi Promenade”, a walkway built on the site of an old freight line, where you can enjoy the sea breeze and the illuminated city. Among night-view enthusiasts, “Bankoku Bridge” is a popular photography spot, famous for capturing the iconic Minatomirai skyline in a single frame.
Another must-visit is the “Yokohama Marine Tower” observation deck (weekday night ticket ¥1,200 for adults), where the Media Art Gallery overlays dynamic digital art onto the night view, creating a unique visual experience. On the first floor, you’ll find the second location of “Bar Noble”, a renowned cocktail bar from Kannai, winner of the World Cocktail Competition. Art can spark your appetite. Luckily, Yokohama is packed with acclaimed restaurants offering diverse flavors and unique vibes. Some are so sought-after that early reservations are a must, so plan ahead. After Tokyo Gendai, treat yourself to unforgettable dining and soak in the sparkling portside night views.
Founded in 1830, the long-established Nadaman operates “Yokohama Nadaman”, located on the 4th floor of the InterContinental® Yokohama Grand in Minatomirai. The restaurant offers teppanyaki counters, sushi counters, and private rooms, providing a wide range of authentic Japanese dining experiences. For a more casual yet refined option, “Yokohama Nadaman Hinkan”, located on the 8th floor of Takashimaya directly connected to Yokohama Station, serves seasonal Japanese dishes in a stylish, modern setting at relatively reasonable prices. Meanwhile, “SUSHI TOKYO TEN”, on the 8th floor of NEWoMan Yokohama, offers a delightful omakase course for around 10,000yen, making high-quality sushi more accessible.
A short eight-minute walk from Yokohama Station, “Kappo Tanakaya”, founded in 1863 and even depicted in Utagawa Hiroshige’s famous The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō woodblock series, invites you to experience history while enjoying its signature unagi hotpot. For premium yakiniku, the highly acclaimed “Yakiniku Ushigoro” also has a branch near Yokohama Station.
In the Minatomirai area, the innovative “Trattoria Tabulé” is a must-visit, where two Michelin-starred chefs collaborate on an unexpected fusion of Middle Eastern and Italian cuisines. For something more traditional, “Yokohama Torigin Minatomirai” is renowned for its yakitori and clay-pot rice, while “Daitokujyu Minatomirai” offers the finest wagyu beef paired with sweeping night views — making it worth reserving a window-side seat in advance.
In the quieter Kannai district, you can savor seasonal flavors at the historic tempura restaurant “Tenshichi” or enjoy premium wagyu steaks and Ise lobster at “Teppanyaki Viande”. For a contemporary twist, “RICE CUISINE S⊇YA (Suya)” serves rice-based dishes paired with curated wines and caters to vegan and gluten-free diets, making it a perfect choice for diverse dining preferences.
The Noge and Isezakicho areas are beloved by locals for their hidden gems. At “Okame”, a long-standing restaurant founded in 1927, enjoy their famous clay-pot rice while sampling seasonal dishes and local sake as you wait for your meal to cook. The nostalgic “Yakitori Ribatei” is another local favorite, offering an authentic retro atmosphere.
Yokohama is also home to gyūnabe (beef hotpot), a culinary symbol of Japan’s modernization during the late 19th century. Influenced by Western food culture during the opening of Yokohama Port, this dish became a local specialty by simmering beef in a rich miso or soy-based broth. The Isezakicho area is particularly famous for its gyūnabe restaurants, with “Ohta Nawanoren”, “Janomeya”, and “Araiya” standing out as iconic names.
If you’re in the mood for a lively night out in Noge, hop between cozy izakayas: try “Noge Suehiro” for yakitori, “Kokkodo” for skewers along the scenic Ōoka River, or “Konakara” for fresh sashimi at reasonable prices.

Since its opening as a port city, Yokohama has been a gateway for Western culture and is celebrated as the birthplace of Japan’s bar scene. In the Meiji era, Western-style bars and pubs sprang up around the foreign settlements, blending exotic charm with a sophisticated nightlife. Today, this legacy thrives, giving Yokohama a distinctive bar culture all its own.
At the entrance to Bashamichi, the “Pilgrim Nineteen’s Club”, located in the basement of the historically designated Sompo Japan Building, offers a classic, atmospheric experience and is operated by the fashion company Tomorrowland. In Kannai, “Bar Noble” features an Art Nouveau-inspired interior where you can enjoy the world championship-winning cocktail ‘Great Sunrise’ crafted by the owner-bartender. At the Hotel New Grand Main Building, try the cocktail ‘Yokohama’ at “Sea Guardian II”, inspired by the city’s nightscape. A similar experience is available at “Sea Guardian III” on the 10th floor of Yokohama Sogo, where you can sip cocktails while taking in stunning views of the city. The “Code Bar” in The Westin Yokohama offers a variety of cocktails themed around postal codes, with each drink reflecting a story tied to the area, best enjoyed alongside panoramic views from the top floor.
Yokohama also boasts bars with a retro charm, reflecting the warmth of its downtown neighborhoods and the Showa era. The “Chrysler Bar”, established in 1950, draws visitors with its vintage signage and evokes a sense of Showa-modern elegance. “Bar Discus” in Kannai, with its large aquarium, offers a relaxed, conversational atmosphere that is highly popular among locals.

After visiting Red Brick Warehouse and Osanbashi, make sure to stop by “Snack Zō no Hana’s Nighttime Visitor Center 2025” at Zō no Hana Terrace, a special three-day event during Tokyo Gendai from September 11 Thu to 13 Sat, 18:00–21:30. Until 20:00, enjoy a happy hour at Zō no Hana Cafe with a set of three drinks for just 1,000 yen. True to its name, the snack bar is run by artists acting as host or hostess, giving visitors a rare chance to chat over drinks. Twelve artists will gather, creating a quirky space where snack booths and a dance floor intersect, bathed in mysterious light, offering lively talks and entertainment.
Pukari Pier is Minatomirai’s gateway to the sea, a floating landmark and docking point for ships. At night, the pier is beautifully illuminated, creating a photogenic scene even when viewed from afar. On the second floor, you’ll find “PIER21 MUSIC CAFE & BAR”, a unique space that blends Showa-era retro charm with the vibe of a modern record bar. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a drink while soaking in the sparkling night views.
At The Grand Oriental wedding venue, the rooftop bar “THE OCEAN’S BAR” is open only for summer weekends, with its final appearances on Friday, September 12, and Saturday and Sunday, September 13–14. Enjoy dynamic, quintessential Minatomirai night views while sipping fruit-filled cocktails.
Nestled in the deep corners of Noge, just steps from Hinodecho Station, lies the hidden gem “BAR Gake to Kaidan”. True to its name, surrounded by cliffs and stairs, this cozy house bar is sprinkled with contemporary art books and clever art pieces. Each day, a different artist takes the helm, turning the bar into a space for everything from art talk to casual conversation over a drink.
Yokohama also boasts Japan’s first brewery, founded during the port-opening era. Relive that history by sampling a variety of beers: at “Libushi Bashamichi”, a stylish brewpub in a former silk inspection hall, you can enjoy award-winning beers, limited releases, craft gin, and food pairings. Nearby, “Yokohama Beer Honten Restaurant UMAYA” serves fresh craft beer straight from the adjacent brewery alongside locally sourced dishes and limited-edition collaborative labels. On the waterfront in Minatomirai, “NUMBER NINE BREWERY” offers a scenic setting to savor freshly brewed beer, while the “7-Eleven” at Hammerhead impresses with a vast selection of domestic and international craft beers—perfect for grabbing a few to sip on the deck or while strolling along the pier for a truly Yokohama-style night out. Cap off the evening on September 14 Sun at 19:00 with a 5-minute fireworks display by “Yokohama Night Flowers” from Shinko Pier—perfect for a celebratory toast.
